Why Small Transactions Can Make Credit Card Processing So Expensive
If customers routinely spend $5, $9 or $12, the few cents charged on every card payment can matter as much as the advertised percentage. Here's how to compare the whole bill.

Quick answer: When a processing plan charges a percentage plus a fixed transaction fee, the fixed portion represents a larger share of a small sale. For merchants with thousands of small transactions per month, those cents accumulate.
The math behind a $9 sale
A published example is Square Free's 2.6% + 15¢ in-person card rate. Square lists other in-person rates for paid plans and offers custom rates in some circumstances; this example is specifically the Free plan, not a claim about every Square account.
SalvaTap Payments publishes 2.00% + 3¢ per transaction for approved merchant accounts, plus a $25 monthly platform fee. Both published structures include a percentage and a fixed amount per transaction.
| Charge | Square Free | SalvaTap standard |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage fee | $0.234 | $0.180 |
| Fixed transaction fee | $0.150 | $0.030 |
| Calculated fee per sale | $0.384 | $0.210 |
Per-transaction amounts are shown before final cent rounding and exclude monthly, equipment, and account-specific fees. Individual transaction rounding can make statement totals vary slightly from multiplying an unrounded amount.
What happens at 9,000 transactions each month?
Consider a hypothetical coffee shop or quick-service restaurant processing 9,000 in-person card transactions averaging $9. This is a model—not a verified merchant statement or an offer of guaranteed savings.
Card sales volume: 9,000 × $9 = $81,000.
| Monthly fee component | Square Free (2.6% + 15¢) | SalvaTap (2% + 3¢) |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage portion | $2,106 | $1,620 |
| Fixed transaction portion | $1,350 | $270 |
| Published base monthly fee included in model | $0 | $25 |
| Calculated monthly total | $3,456 | $1,915 |
Under these exact published-rate assumptions, the mathematical difference is $18,492 over 12 months. This is not a promise of actual savings: approval, card-present eligibility, equipment changes, software, contract terms, and other account-specific costs must be reviewed.
The fixed-fee portion alone differs by 12¢ per transaction: at 9,000 transactions that's $1,080 per month before comparing percentage rates or monthly charges. At any monthly transaction count, one additional cent per transaction costs one cent multiplied by that count.
Why advertised interchange rates aren't the whole story
Visa describes interchange as fees transferred between participating banks in a card transaction; the merchant pays the negotiated merchant discount to its financial institution. Visa's official explanation is an important reminder that interchange is not simply a merchant's final processor rate.
Stripe's breakdown of terminal processing rates explains interchange, network assessments and processor markups, and distinguishes bundled flat-rate pricing from interchange-plus. A small advertised markup on interchange-plus is only part of the total cost; it does not establish which processor is cheaper without real transaction data.
Conversely, a flat rate is not automatically the best option. Merchant card mix, debit volume, processing method, average ticket and additional fees can favor a different structure. SalvaTap does not currently offer interchange-plus, and merchants should compare the complete alternatives available to them.
Five things to check on your processing statement
- Total monthly card volume: how many dollars actually went through the processor?
- Number of approved transactions: how many times did a fixed fee apply?
- All processing and account charges: include percentage fees, fixed fees, monthly fees and separately billed services.
- Sales channel: in-person card-present rates may differ from online, keyed or manually entered payments.
- Other commitments: verify equipment ownership, software subscriptions, leasing, cancellation conditions and support requirements before switching.
Effective processing cost for the period is total applicable processing fees divided by card sales volume, multiplied by 100. Keep payment equipment and other business expenses visible as separate comparison items instead of quietly leaving them out.
